I will be away for sometime taking care of family during the summer. I will try and post this article from my phone. I have no internet access other than traveling to the nearest city 85 miles away, so I will only be posting from time to time when I can during the summer months. In a recent message sent to our email account a loyal viewer Sean Mac shared with us something interesting he came across. We want to recognize his contribution to this article. A s many of you might recall during the Boston Bombing incident we had a crisis actress show up for the second time. Then she showed up twice in the news during the Boston Bombing, once while at a cafe on the Boston streets to give her news account. Then again this actress showed up during the massive search for Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. She appeared once again during the Albuquerque New Mexico church stabbings.

The extent of the injuries is not yet known. There were 78 passengers and five crew members on the train when it derailed, according to Amtrak. The southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were completely blocked by the train. Chris Thomas, spokesman for Providence St.

We don’t generally see these big boys in the passenger terminal unless they have provided a rescue to a long-distance Amtrak. A little internet research reveals that Metrolink is leasing these at great expense to hook up in front of their new Rotem Cab cars. So, bear with me. The commuter rail and Amtrak’s Surfliner run a push-pull configuration with the locomotive at one end, and a cab car at the other.
In one direction, the locomotive pulls the train as usual. But in the other direction, the locomotive pushes with a cab car in front, running the loco indirectly. Generally, the locomotives push the trains into LA and pull them out, for both Metrolink and Amtrak.

US 5 Interchanges The two US 5 interchanges in West Springfield deserve a special note, because if you are not familiar with them, you could wind up going somewhere you did not intend to. US 5 is a thru road, while it has exit ramps for the local roads. Wye and Crossing under I91 There is a nice pedestrian overpass put in just for us railfans to get shots of trains crossing the Connecticut River. I love trains, and I love signals. Originally posted by linbe: Greyhound provides fuel efficient, low priced transportation to most of the country on thin or negative profit margins, why is Amtrak being kept around with government subsidies? What compelling advantage does Amtrak have over Greyhound. There is a lot of historical precedent in almost every country on the planet to have rail travel and maintenance supported in some way by the government.
It’s one of those “national pride” sorts of things. That’s just how it is. But more practically, the issue of where exactly new rail lines would go, and the expectations of the purpose of, and quality of, those rail lines is something that is of public interest and cannot reasonably be decided by organizations whose primary purpose is to generate profit.
The public funding of large-scale transportation is not limited to rails — airports, subways, roads and ferries are often subsidized by government as well. One example that comes to mind immediately is the MTA Capital Construction Company, the company responsible for engaging in large-scale transit construction projects in New York City. Most of their money comes from government budgets. And you know what, you’re actually wrong on an important part of your contention — while most long-distance bus travel, at least in the United States and Canada, are not funded with public money, Greyhound has been selling off local and rural line services to other companies, and many of those companies have been using government subsidies.

Would I ride with Amtrak in a roomette again? Yes. This is not a glamorous experience, but it isn’t really meant to be, in my opinion. I would exclusively ride with.
The persimmons are being overpowered by too much ginger. Five years ago, Kulp left a a high-profile job in New York as the chef de cuisine at Torrisi Italian Specialties , then one of the most talked-about restaurants in Manhattan. RED HOOK, N.Y. >> The town wants an explanation from Amtrak about why the railroad feels it’s necessary to block public access to a road between the train tracks and Hudson River in the village.
This was how I stayed for eight hours as [ I stepped off of the platform and up onto the train, I moved through the spacious aisle, choose a seat for myself that had a full window view, deposited by bags in the huge overhead rack, sat down, tilted my seat way back, and relaxed. I slept, ate, wrote a little, watched the countryside of my native state roll past, and found myself very impressed by the luxury of coach travel with Amtrak. My daughter watched videos and played in her own huge seat and my wife slept soundly.
When using public transportation in the USA my first choice is to go by train. Amtrak is the company that runs the passenger rail lines in my home country, and they now do so as well as any other country in the world. I made three trips via Amtrak in March on three different lines going between Rochester and New York City, and all three trains departed and arrived on time and rides were classic episodes of leisurely travel. Leg room on Amtrak train I laughed to myself as I thought about the suckers going this route by plane.

Can Amtrak Ever Be Profitable? January 5, This is hardly a new development. Amtrak has a long and storied history of functioning at a loss despite government subsidies. So, as we enter what appears to be a new era maybe? We rounded up some people who pay attention to this issue and asked for their ideas to fix Amtrak, if it can be fixed at all. Thanks to everyone in the Quorum for participating — and as always, let us know what you think in the comments section.

I would wager its a case of the people who created the system no longer working at United and Amtrak and nobody else giving half a damn. The program is actually from Continental, and United simply continued it. They also have a United ticket desk at NY Penn Station, another relic and a flight operated by a bus between Allentown and Newark The program has seen no improvements or additions in over a decade, and is not user friendly.
Getting your Amtrak ticket from the quick ticket machines can be difficult without an instruction manual, and most Amtrak employees arent trained on the matter. Also, if your ticket isnt scanned on the train, it will cause issues down the line as United can cancel your entire itinerary. You are also burdened with transfer time rules set for airplanes that dont make sense for trains. Id love to see the program expanded or improved.
Amtrak Trains are the Best Public Transportation in America
There have been many conversations around the web about what it’s really like to take Amtrak for long trips, so I want to give you the most accurate and true depiction. We decided to get a roomette for the first and longest leg of our travel on the California Zephyr. We had the small room from Emeryville the Amtrak station right outside of San Francisco to Chicago for two days and two nights.
After a seven-hour stop in Chicago, we rode the remaining 17 hours of our journey to NYC in coach seats.
Amtrak isn’t a private company – not yet anyways. it’s covered under federal protection similar to that granted to federal courthouses, federal reserve, and other facilities. And until it .
Even though there was heavy traffic, I figured the small number of passengers on the bus and the short time that it took us to get through customs would have us arrive into Seattle early. He came to my room quite early to introduce himself, explain things, tell me to take the 2 Empire Builder wine glasses home with me, and ask if I needed anything else. Eugene also explained that the beverage card was good for one free non-alcoholic beverage once the Sightseer Lounge Car was attached to our train in Spokane.
However, that won’t do me any good since I’m leaving the train in Spokane! Maybe I can use this on the return train. She even gave me her business card without me asking! I guess that means that there aren’t that many people in coach yet. Also, there are only 2 Sleeping Cars on the train so far. Thus, they did not do dinner by reservations but instead had first come first served starting at 6 PM.
In case you are not aware of how the consists of the Empire Builder work, the westbound train originates from two different places.
